Shamrock Spider (Araneus trifolium)
This photo, taken at L. H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, is most likely of a marbled orb weaver spider (Araneus marmoreus). This spider makes an orb web. It then makes a retreat at the edge of the web, usually a silk tube inside of a curled leaf. To finish the web it runs a line from the center of the web to the retreat. It holds onto the line like a fisherman. When it feels a tug on the line it rushes back into the web and snatches its prey.
